Agriculture constitutes a dynamic factor in the Cuban economy by requiring the development of other branches that complete the cycle of its productions.
To promote the sector's performance, the Cuban Government has implemented agricultural policies related to economic incentives and access for producers to financing, inputs, agricultural markets and technology, among others.
The ownership of the land, for the most part, remains in the hands of the State, more than 70% is managed by non-state forms such as Basic Units of Cooperative Production (UBPC), Credit Cooperatives and Agricultural Production Cooperatives. The sector has identified strengths and opportunities that can be enhanced with foreign investment.
There is availability of agricultural land with unused areas that allow the expansion of the current productive frontier in a short time. The country has 6.3 million hectares of agricultural land, of which 2.7 million are cultivated.
There are potentialities for the increase of areas under irrigation from the recovery of systems or with new investments. Structured phyto and zoosanitary protection systems with nationwide networks and effective border controls. Cuba is a free zone for some type I diseases existing in the area.
