Crude Oil

Activity

  • Sector Information

Geologically, Cuba has the Caribbean volcanic arc to the south and the southern edge of the North American shelf to the north. Most of the oil production in Cuba takes place in a sector between Havana and Matanzas where the largest oil field is located having geological reserves of around 10000 million barrels. Almost all of the Cuban territory, of about 100000 km², is a prospect for oil exploration, besides the entire shallow water zone and its extension to the deep water zone.

In Cuba several dozen oil fields have been discovered, most of them extra heavy crude oil, although there also exist fields of light, very light, and medium crude oil. Those fields are mostly found at sea and are reached from land with horizontal drilling, which not only allows access to the field, but also achieves greater productivity.

Cuba's special development zone (ZEE) at the Gulf of Mexico shares the same scenario, the same bedrock, reservoirs and seals of the prolific Gulf of Mexico oil basin where giant deposits have been discovered and one of the largest industries in the world has developed.

In Cuba's special development zone (ZEE) there are several prospects mapped, which are estimated to contain more than 10000 million barrels of good quality extractable oil. (>20o API).
